about

The self-titled debut from the innovative LA-based duo, originally released in 1991 on Emigre Music. Newly remastered for re-release in 2019.

Supercollider stripped alternative rock down to its bare essentials, clashing electric guitar and drums against samples of their own making. Their unique approach to sampling began by taking bits of their own playing and forming pulses to drive the music.

After the album's release, Supercollider shared the stage with bands as diverse as Galaxie 500, Chris and Cosey, and Jad Fair (Half Japanese).

A poster of the cover artwork, designed by Rudy VanderLans with Michael Horton, is in the Decorative Arts and Design collection at LACMA.

"From its minimal start, Supercollider's debut showcases a band that was happily and completely out of sync with almost everything around it –nothing in American pop and rock music of 1991 sounded anything like it, much less the indie music scene it was part of by default."

–– Ned Raggett, AllMusic.com

"Supercollider's debut is a coolly studied practice of sophistication and orchestral self-containment"

––CMJ

"There are no catchy choruses on this tape, and no crashing crescendos, either. Oh so calmly, I turn on the boombox and let out a quiet whoop of enjoyment."

––File 13
